AC out right now?

Call or text us, then check these three things first.

  1. Breakers. The furnace or air handler and the outdoor unit usually have separate breakers. Reset a tripped one once. If it trips again, leave it off.
  2. Thermostat. Set to cool and below room temperature. Replace the batteries if the screen is blank.
  3. Filter. Replace it if it is gray with dust. If you see ice on the copper lines, set the system to off with the fan on so it thaws.

If anyone at home is elderly or unwell, get them somewhere cool first. Kern County opens its valley cooling centers on days forecast at 105°F or more. What to do in the first hour.

How it works

  1. Describe the trouble. The form takes about a minute, or phone us. A picture of the condenser's data plate saves the technician a guess.
  2. One Kern County company phones you. It carries a California C-20 license. After a few questions about the house it books a visit.
  3. A number on paper first. After finding the fault, the technician writes up what the fix costs. Yes or no is your call.

Why a Bakersfield air conditioner works harder than it used to

Meadows Field has kept daily records since 1937. Over 1961-1990 it averaged 38.3 days a year at 100°F or hotter. Over 2016-2025 it averaged 51.8, and the 2020s so far are running at 51.7. The record high, 115°F, was set in 1950 and tied on September 6, 2022.

The bigger change is at night. A system catches up after sunset, when the outdoor unit can shed heat into cooler air. Nights that stayed at 75°F or warmer went from 16.6 a year to 32.8. The average July low is now 73.7°F, up from 70.1°F over 1961-1990.

Valley summers are also dry and dusty: the airport averages 5.72 inches of rain a year and almost none from June through September. Dust on the outdoor coil and long run hours wear out capacitors and fan motors. Common Bakersfield AC failures.

Older houses, older systems

About 43% of the 211,095 homes in the 14 ZIP codes we cover were built before 1980, and another 27% between 1980 and 1999 (Census ACS 2020-2024). In Westchester, Oleander-Sunset, Oildale and East Bakersfield most homes predate 1980, so the ducts may never have been resized for the current system.

The northwest and southwest went the other way. In Rosedale, Seven Oaks and Silver Creek about half the homes were built in 2000 or later, which puts a lot of original systems at 20 years old or more. Repair or replace.

About 58% of homes here heat with gas and 35% with electricity. When the condenser finally goes, the electric-heat households are the ones most likely to come out ahead with a heat pump, which cools in July and heats through tule fog season from the same outdoor unit. Heat pumps in Bakersfield.

Questions Bakersfield homeowners ask

How much does AC repair cost in Bakersfield?

Published 2026 national figures put most AC repairs at $250 to $700, with a $375 average (Fixr), or $150 to $650 for common fixes (This Old House). A capacitor is at the low end; a compressor runs $600 to $3,000 or more. Bakersfield prices vary by company, so get the price in writing before work starts.

My system went in before 2010. Should I still fix it?

It depends on the part. A dead compressor or a leaking coil on a unit that old usually costs too much to justify; a $100 to $400 capacitor or a new contactor usually doesn't. This Old House puts the typical life of a home cooling system at 12 to 15 years. Valley summers with long run hours tend to push units toward the short end of that.

My AC runs all afternoon and the house still sits at 84. Is it broken?

Not always. On a 108 degree afternoon a system that is working can fall behind and lose a few degrees, then catch up after dark. If it never catches up overnight, or the air at the vents isn't cold, something is wrong. July nights at Meadows Field now average about 73.7°F, so a healthy system should gain ground after sunset. Common causes are a dirty filter or outdoor coil, a weak capacitor and a refrigerant leak.

Do I need a permit to replace my AC in Bakersfield?

Yes, as a rule. Replacing a central air conditioner or furnace, or the ducts, is an HVAC alteration under California's Energy Code. That calls for a building permit and, for an air conditioner in Bakersfield's part of the state, an independent check of the refrigerant charge. The City of Bakersfield handles permits inside city limits; Kern County handles unincorporated areas such as Oildale and Rosedale. The contractor normally pulls it.

Who will come to my house?

A technician from one independent heating and cooling company that works your part of Kern County and carries a C-20 license from California's Contractors State License Board. Bakersfield Cooling Desk only hands your request over; we don't send anyone of our own. Type the company's name into the CSLB lookup before the visit.

Can you help with my car's AC?

No. Plenty of people searching for Bakersfield AC repair mean a pickup or a sedan, but every company we pass requests to works on houses. A truck or car needs an auto shop.
